TED Conference to Make its Home in San Diego, Starting in 2027

TED originated in Monterey in 1984 as an exclusive conference to bring together leaders in Technology, Entertainment, and Design. It would eventually grow to transform global perspectives, becoming a worldwide phenomenon. Four decades later, TED is set to return to California for a new chapter. Starting in 2027, the annual flagship TED conference will permanently relocate to the vibrant waterfront district of San Diego, utilizing the San Diego Convention Center as its core venue, with programming extending to other notable locations throughout the city.
According to the organization, this move follows an intensive, two-year evaluation focusing on key areas like infrastructure, community impact, and the potential to significantly expand TED’s mission. San Diego was chosen because it represents a critical juncture—both literally and culturally—for innovation. Details regarding the 2027 programming schedule, pass structures, and pricing will be released after the 2026 conference, which will mark the conference’s final year in Vancouver.

San Diego Unified Postpones Vote on Affordable Housing for Staff

Yesterday, San Diego Unified’s board considered approving the largest slate of affordable education workforce housing ever attempted in California. The board was set to vote on proposals from developers to convert unused school buildings into affordable staff housing at five different locations, which would have created 1,500 units - enough to meet the district’s goal of creating enough housing for 10% of its workforce. By a vote of three to two, the board voted to postpone the approval of housing proposals at four of the five district-owned sites up for consideration. The board did approve one proposal, a 108-unit project at the district’s Instructional Media Center. That proposal was the only submission the district received for that site.
Hillstone Project to Change Course in Del Mar with New Location of Honor Bar, Scrapping Gulfstream

The long-anticipated Hillstone project in Del Mar has finally confirmed its plans, ending years of speculation. Instead of the initially rumored Seafood restaurant, Gulfstream, they have officially announced the opening of Honor Bar. This smaller, bar-centric concept is a hit in locations like Beverly Hills and Montecito, and frankly, it feels like a perfect fit for this area. Patrons can expect a concise menu featuring Hillstone's "greatest hits"—think incredible cocktails, the famous honor burger, french dips, and crispy chicken sandwiches. Although the project has faced construction delays, the latest updates indicate this highly-anticipated Hillstone staple should open its doors in the first half of 2026.
